![]() One issue with the abilities, however, is that the only indicator of whether or not they are available to use is at the bottom of the screen in a similar fashion to MOBAs or MMOS. Which means there are some risks to dying in this game, however, I played with the ability turned on so I’d never lose my ship because that is the sane thing to do. ![]() ![]() Passive abilities are things like granting extra money for killstreaks, boosted stats, or the ability to keep your ship when you die as you’d otherwise lose it. Abilities range from attacks to heals to defense having a nice balance of them is important. Six abilities can be equipped at a time, four cooldown abilities, and two passive abilities. That said, I did quite enjoy upgrading my ship and unlocking new abilities. Some people don’t mind grinding, but I’m not one of them. The grind isn’t so bad at first, but within three hours I found myself redoing easier levels over and over just to be able to afford to upgrade my stats which allowed me to equip better loot. This loot aspect can also lead to a grind, as levels are increasingly more difficult, and you will certainly have to upgrade your ship to be able to survive them. The ship building aspect of the game adds some depth to what is an otherwise tired genre, which makes Drifting Lands feel fresh and new. The developers themselves have stated they are against such practices and they only consider DLC if it’s something closer to an expansion, so no worries there. Ships can be upgraded with loot collected from destroyed enemies during levels, as well as from an in-game store which thankfully doesn’t have microtransactions. In my time with the game (three hours) I only came across a handful of enemies which populated the randomly generated and thus repetitive levels.īefore diving into the game, players will be tasked with selecting one of three different types of ships, each with its own abilities and stats. The ships themselves are a bit more imaginative than the average for the genre but are nothing to write home about. The animated backgrounds really pop without distracting from the action happening in front of them, and most are quite easy on the eyes such as one level that features tornadoes. I wonder how their sales doing, though, because their forums are empty :( I wish good luck and many future games to the developers.Running at a smooth framerate of at least 60FPS , Drifting Lands is easily the best-looking space shooter I’ve ever played. ![]() This is the case where I would gladly pay more for more story content, but hopes for DLC are slim, because that's not EA or Ubisoft :)Īll in all, I really liked Drifting Lands, and for me, it's a strong competitor for the title of the best scroll-shooter of the year along with Xenoraid (which also was quite innovative and well-balanced, but not as beautiful as Drifting Lands). The only complaint I can bring is that I felt the storyline was cut a bit too short, and I felt no strong motivation to continue playing after it, even though I still haven't unlocked the last level of ships and weapons. It looks so good that I have no questions about 1Gb size.ĭiablo-like loot system is also an interesting touch, and one I only seen once before in Amaranthine, where it was much, much less interesting. I also liked how the developers tried to make the game accessible to both casual and hardcore players, by providing skills that let you play at a lower difficulty, but less optimally (in terms of scores), like Automatic Retreat and Single Impact, which makes you invincible after a single hit, but halves Focus score, which is necessary to use late-game skills and to gain more credits from every level (and therefore grind for upgrades less).Īnd while many complain that weapons lack differentiation, I think they are still good enough.Īlso, Drifting Lands is very beautiful, and has a modern look, which few other games in the genre go for, or can achieve with their limited budgets. The team done a great job with skills, which augment the usual constantly firing weapons, especially with bosses that require you to pick appropriate skills carefully. I found Drifting Lands to be a very good blend of scroll-shooter and Action RPG. ![]()
